😠 is the “angry face,” with furrowed brows and a hard frown. It has been in Unicode since 2010 (version 6.0) and is the baseline anger emoji. Because the face is not drawn bright red the way 😡 is, it usually signals annoyance or a complaint rather than fury, though it can be turned up when the words around it are harsh.
How it’s used
- Reacting to bad service: “Third delivery delay this month 😠”
- Playful grumbling: “Who ate my leftovers? 😠”
- Sharing outrage about a news story: “They cut the program again 😠”
- Mock warnings: “One more joke about my cooking and you’re walking home 😠”
- Solidarity: “They said that to you? I’m mad on your behalf 😠”
People tend to pick an anger emoji by intensity. 😠 is the baseline, 😡 (pouting face) is rage, and 🤬 (face with symbols on mouth) is explosive swearing. 💢 stacked next to a face adds extra heat. 😤 (face with steam from nose) is often misfiled as anger, but it more often means frustration, determination or smugness.
Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world
In English the emoji maps onto “angry,” “mad” or a stand-alone “grr,” and its range is wide. You will see it as an actual statement of anger in comments on news or social posts, as the “Angry” reaction on a feed, and also as a friendly bit of mock-grumbling in a group chat. The surrounding words tell you which.
In Korea it is far more often used while grumbling to friends than for real fury, as a stand-in for the text face ㅡㅡ or a trailing 아 진짜. Serious anger is stated in words, and the emoji adds tone. In a work chat, aiming it at a colleague can look aggressive, so people use it carefully.
In Japan the name is ぷんぷん, the sound of cartoonish, cheeks-puffed-out sulking. The feel is cute rather than frightening, and a message like 約束忘れてた😠 (“you forgot our plans”) to a partner is usually taken as light teasing. For genuine rage, the red 😡 is the one people reach for.
Where it gets misread
- Directed at a coworker, it can read as a threat or hostility. When you have a complaint, explain it in words.
- It is not the same intensity as 😡. Mixing them can make you seem angrier than you meant to be.
- It is not 😤, which has steam coming from the nose and usually means “I’m fed up” or “watch me.”
- It is not 😈 or 👿, which have horns and mean mischief or villainy rather than anger.
Design differences by platform
On most platforms 😡 is drawn with a red face, while 😠 keeps more of the yellow, so the color alone sets the intensity. How much red or orange creeps into 😠, how thick the brows are and how deep the frown curves does differ by vendor. That means the same emoji can look seriously furious on one phone and like a cartoon sulk on another. When your intent matters, spell it out in words.
