🤭 is a face with a hand held over its mouth, trying and failing to hold in a laugh. It is one of the newer faces, added in Unicode 10.0 in 2017, and English speakers often call it the giggle emoji. Shyness, mischief and the thrill of a secret all live in the same picture, which is what makes it so versatile.

How it’s used

  • Shy delight: “He actually said I looked nice 🤭”
  • A secret: “Okay, between us 🤭”
  • A slip of the tongue: “Whoops, I said it out loud 🤭”
  • A cheeky confession: “I ate the last cookie 🤭”
  • Sweet flirting: “Can’t wait for Saturday 🤭”

🤫 (shushing face) says “keep this quiet,” while 🤭 says “I can’t hold it in.” 😳 (flushed face) is real embarrassment, and 🙊 (speak-no-evil monkey) is the comic “I won’t say a word.” 🤭 sits between them with a bit of delight.

Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world

In English, 🤭 is “oops,” “tee-hee,” or “I said what I said.” It frames gossip (“Guess who I saw yesterday 🤭”), mild naughtiness and flirtation. It can also tip toward teasing: a hand over the mouth while laughing at somebody’s blunder is not always kind. In British English, it also suits a polite, self-aware “whoops.”

In Korean the face goes with 헤헤, 히히 and 부끄, and it has become one of the most popular faces among people in their twenties and thirties. It is the standard response to a compliment you feel shy about, a small tease between friends or a hint of anticipation. It comes across as endearing, though possibly too casual for a formal setting.

Japanese culture has a long-standing image of covering your mouth when you laugh, as a polite and modest gesture, so 🤭 sits comfortably next to 「うふふ」, 「くすくす」 and 「えへへ」. It can express bashfulness or modesty, and with 「あらやだ」 it carries a hint of mild embarrassment. Paired with 🤫, it makes a playful secret.

Where it gets misread

  • It is not 🤫. 🤭 is laughter leaking out, not a request for silence.
  • Under someone’s mistake or misfortune, it can read as quietly laughing at them.
  • In an apology it suggests you aren’t taking things seriously.
  • 😳 is more flustered, and 🤭 is amused. Mixing them up changes the mood.

Design differences by platform

Every platform draws a hand over the mouth, but eyes and hand shape differ. Smiling, curved eyes read as a shy giggle, and wide round eyes read as a startled “oops.” Some hands are simple and rounded while others are drawn in detail, so the same message can feel cuter or cheekier on different devices. Apple, Google (Noto), Microsoft Fluent and Samsung are all clear enough to recognise at a glance.
