😵‍💫 is the face with spiral eyes. It arrived with Emoji 13.1 as a combination of 😵 and 💫 joined by a zero-width joiner, which is why older devices sometimes show two separate symbols in its place. The swirl for eyes is a cartoon staple for dizziness, hypnosis and general confusion, and the emoji took over that job from the X-eyed face, which was reserved for being knocked out.

How it’s used

  • Overload: “Five meetings back to back and my eyes are swirling 😵‍💫”
  • Dizziness: “Got off the rollercoaster and the world is still spinning 😵‍💫”
  • Confusion: “I read this manual three times and understand nothing 😵‍💫”
  • Tipsy: “Two drinks in and everything is a bit loopy 😵‍💫”
  • Brain fog: “Can’t think straight today 😵‍💫”

If 😵 is “knocked out” and 😮‍💨 is “let me exhale,” then 😵‍💫 is “my head is spinning.” It also differs from 🥴, the woozy face, which is more about being drunk or glassy-eyed than hopelessly overwhelmed.

Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world

In English, the emoji fits phrases like “my head is spinning,” “overwhelmed,” “brain fog” and “I’m so confused.” It shows up in discussions of being overstimulated, of too much information coming in at once, and sometimes of being hypnotized or entranced by something. It also stands in for literal dizziness after a spin, a bad ride or a rough night.

In Korean, it matches 정신이 하나도 없다 (“I don’t have a single clear thought”), 눈이 빙글빙글 돈다 and 혼이 빠진다 (“my soul is gone”). People use it when work piles up, when a confusing explanation arrives, or when they get queasy. Because the emoji is fairly recent, it is not yet as common as 😵.

In Japan, the name 目を回した顔 describes it literally, and the idiom 目が回るほど忙しい (“so busy my eyes spin”) is a natural fit. It is closest to the manga-style (@_@) face and is popular for being frazzled, hypnotized or swept up in excitement. For “I’m slammed,” it may be the most natural emoji to pick in Japanese.

Where it gets misread

  • It is not 😵. X-eyes mean knocked out or finished; spirals mean dizzy or confused.
  • If you are describing a real medical problem, it can look like a joke. For symptoms that need attention, write them out in words.
  • On older systems or in some apps it may show as 😵 and 💫 side by side. The meaning comes through, but the look differs.
  • It overlaps with 🥴 but is not the same: 🥴 suggests drunk or dazed; this one is “my head is spinning.”

Design differences by platform

Each platform gives the yellow face spiral eyes, but the number of turns and thickness of the spirals, the shape of the mouth (wavy or slightly open) and the facial expression differ. Apple’s spirals are crisp and the mouth is slightly open, Google’s Noto is simple and cartoonish, Microsoft’s Fluent has a soft three-dimensional look, and Samsung’s has a similar layout in slightly different colors. Because it is a combined emoji, devices that don’t support it show two separate symbols instead.
