😴 is a face fast asleep, eyes shut and a little “Zzz” rising. It was added in Unicode 6.1 in 2012, and its Japanese name is simply 寝る, “to sleep.” In English it covers three different messages with one picture: “I’m tired,” “goodnight” and “this is boring.”
How it’s used
- Tired: “It’s 3am and I’m still up 😴”
- Saying goodnight: “Heading to bed, night all 😴”
- Boredom: “Three hours of meetings 😴”
- Sarcasm: “Everyone says this film is amazing 😴”
- Rough mornings: “Monday commute 😴”
😪 (sleepy face, with a snot bubble) is the stage before: still awake, barely. 🥱 (yawning face) is the moment tiredness or boredom hits, 💤 is the sound of sleep, and 🛌 (person in bed) is already under the covers. 😴 is the one you send when you have already given up.
Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world
English speakers use 😴 for exactly that spread: “So sleepy 😴,” “Good night 😴,” and “That presentation was a snoozefest 😴.” It suits sarcasm well, as in “Wake me up when it’s over 😴,” and it turns up in memes about Mondays, alarm clocks, jet lag and early shifts. Sent as a reaction to someone’s story or opinion, it reads as “yawn,” so it can sting.
Korean pairs it with 졸려, 자야지, 꿀잠 (“sweet sleep”) and 굿밤. It is a familiar complaint during exams and overtime, and it works as a soft exit in KakaoTalk, as in “이만 잘게😴” (“I’m going to bed”). People also use it jokingly for “I’m dying of boredom.”
In Japan the name is 寝る, and it goes with 「ねむい」 and 「おやすみ」. There is a word 寝落ち for falling asleep mid-conversation, and it is typical to leave one 😴 behind as the last message before vanishing. Japanese chats prefer short reactions, so a quick 😴 is a gentle way to end a conversation.
Where it gets misread
- Replying 😴 to someone’s message says “you’re boring me,” and it can be rude. If it’s your own tiredness, say so in words.
- It isn’t 😪. 😪 is drowsy but still talking, and 😴 means already gone.
- It does not mean someone has passed out or is dead; that’s closer to 💀 or 😵.
- In a serious work meeting, even a joke 😴 is risky.
Design differences by platform
Apple, Google (Noto), Microsoft Fluent and Samsung all give you a face with shut eyes and a Zzz nearby. The size and colour of the Zzz, whether the mouth is open and extras like a nose bubble differ from vendor to vendor. An open mouth feels like deep sleep, and a closed one like a peaceful nap. The Zzz is the main clue everywhere.
