🤪 has mismatched eyes and its tongue out, which gives it the look of someone who has stopped being sensible for a while. It was added in Unicode 10.0 in 2017. “Zany” is not a word most people use out loud, so in practice it is called the crazy face, goofy face or silly face. Its quirk is that it doesn’t need a target: it describes your own energy rather than anyone else’s mistake.

How it’s used

  • Giddy excitement: “Summer break starts tomorrow 🤪”
  • A weird joke: “Dressed like this on purpose 🤪”
  • Frazzled brain: “Day three of deadlines and I’ve lost it 🤪”
  • Playful taunt: “Can’t catch me 🤪”
  • Owning up to a mess: “Typed my password wrong ten times 🤪”

😜 (winking face with tongue) is a deliberate tease aimed at someone, and 😝 (squinting face with tongue) is the childish “nyah nyah.” 🤪 is more about your own chaotic state than about teasing anybody. 🥴 (woozy face) is genuinely dazed, whereas 🤪 is wired.

Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world

English speakers pair 🤪 with the “unhinged” meme voice: “me at 3am 🤪,” “my brain on Friday 🤪.” It is an emoji for performing mild chaos, usually about yourself, and it fits sleepless humor, caffeine and spontaneous plans. One caveat is the alternate name “crazy face.” Some people avoid “crazy” as a casual word for mental illness, so they skip this emoji in formal or sensitive settings.

In Korean it matches 미쳤나 봐 (“I must be crazy”), 정줄 놓았다 (“I’ve lost my grip”) and 텐션 올랐다 (“my energy is up”). It is a lively replacement for ㅋㅋㅋ among friends and works for freedom, such as the day exams end. It leans young and informal, so you would not send it to a boss.

The Japanese name is ふざけた顔, “a face that is playing around,” and it signals おふざけ (a joke) and ハイテンション (sky-high mood). Because ふざける can also mean not taking something seriously, aiming it at another person risks sounding sarcastic. In Japanese social media, 😜 or 😝 and text-based 顔文字 still feel more familiar.

Where it gets misread

  • Aimed at someone else, it can mean “you’re being an idiot.” Pointing it at yourself is the safe use.
  • It is not a wink. 😜 is a deliberate flirty tease, while 🤪 is a burst of chaotic cheer.
  • Don’t use it to mock mental illness or anyone’s behaviour as “crazy.”
  • On a sincere apology or thank-you it looks flippant.

Design differences by platform

The mismatched eyes and out-stuck tongue are the common core across Apple, Google (Noto), Microsoft Fluent and Samsung. Eyebrow height, tongue shape and how sparkly the eyes are differ by vendor. A wide-eyed version looks wild with excitement, and a squinted version looks more like a prank. These variations are small, and the face is recognizable on every platform.
