🐶 is the face of a dog with drooping ears. It entered Unicode 6.0 in 2010. Unlike 🐕, which shows the whole dog walking, 🐶 is a close-up, which puts the expression and friendliness front and center. It is used for real pets and also as an affectionate way to describe people.
How it’s used
- Pet posts: “Morning walk with the little guy 🐶”
- Affection: “You’re such a good boy 🐶”
- Describing a sweet person: “He’s a total golden retriever 🐶”
- Welcome-home energy: “My dog when I get home 🐶”
- Animal-lover content: rescue appeals, adoption posts, vet visits
🐕 is a dog in full profile, 🐩 is a poodle and 🦮 is a guide dog. For simple cuteness, 🐶 is the natural choice. With 🥺 for puppy-dog eyes or 😍 for adoration, it conveys a stronger devotion.
Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world
In English, the internet has its own dog vocabulary: “pupper,” “doggo,” “good boy,” “who’s a good dog?” 🐶 sits comfortably next to all of it. “Puppy love” and “puppy eyes” bring in affection and begging looks, and “dog days” use the word for summer heat, though that is not an emoji meaning. In slang, “dog” can also describe a man who flirts too much, so be aware of context when the target is a person.
In Korea, 강아지 (puppy) is a pet name for loved ones, children and juniors as well as for real dogs, and the internet-born 멍멍이 and 댕댕이 add to the cute atmosphere. There is also a joking habit of replacing profane “개” expressions with 🐶, like writing 🐶소리 for nonsense, so sending it without context to a person can be read as an insult.
In Japan the official name is イヌの顔, though people say 犬, ワンちゃん or わんわん. Dogs are treated as family members, so the emoji shows up in posts about walks, grooming and vet visits. The statue of Hachiko in Shibuya, a famously loyal dog, gives the image a loyalty association too.
Where it gets misread
- Calling someone 🐶 can be adorable or insulting depending on your relationship. Think first.
- The 🐶소리-style euphemism for nonsense in Korean can read as a put-down if used without context.
- It is not 🐕 (a whole dog walking) or 🐺 (wolf). 🐶 is the cute face.
- It does not point to a specific breed. The drawing is a generic dog that differs by platform.
Design differences by platform
Fur color and ear shape vary. Apple’s version has a brown face with a pale muzzle and a gentle, realistic look, while Google’s Noto is simple and rounded like a cartoon. Microsoft’s Fluent is three-dimensional, and Samsung’s expression is clearly drawn. In all of them the general impression is the same: a sweet dog with floppy ears.
