Meaning and usage

🥺 has oversized, shiny eyes, raised brows and a small, wobbly mouth. It was added in 2018 with Unicode 11, which makes it a fairly young emoji, but it spread very quickly. People call it the “puppy-dog eyes” face, and it is mostly used as a cute, half-joking plea (“please?”), as a sign of being moved to tears, or as a cuddly way to say “you hurt my feelings.” It rarely means actual crying.

How it’s used

  • Asking: “Can we please get pizza 🥺”
  • Feeling left out: “You went without me…? 🥺”
  • Being touched: “I can’t believe you remembered 🥺”
  • Shy invitation: “Wanna come with me? 🥺”
  • Overwhelmed by cuteness: “This kitten video is making me cry 🥺”

The ladder of tears goes like this: 😢 (crying face) is real sadness, 😭 (loudly crying) is a flood, and 🥹 (face holding back tears) is being overcome with emotion. 🥺 sits before all of that, as a plea with tears just on the horizon. Shy flirting often uses it with 👉🥺👈, the fingers-pointing-together meme.

Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world

In English, the emoji grew up on Twitter and TikTok. “pls 🥺” and “can you do me a favor 🥺” are both sincere and tongue-in-cheek, and it sits alongside baby-talk spellings like “uwu.” It can express “I’m so proud of you 🥺” just as well as “you’re so sweet.” It can be ironic or earnest, and tone depends on the sentence around it.

In Korea it is mainly an affectionate emoji used between friends and couples. “Can’t we? 🥺” and “I’m upset 🥺” get used for aegyo, a cute, appealing way of asking for something, and for gentle sulking. In work chat or formal settings it tends to feel childish.

In Japan, 🥺 became the emblem of the slang word ぴえん, a made-up crying sound that spread among young women around 2019 and 2020 and stood for sadness, trouble or mild distress. There was even a fashion style called ぴえん系. The craze has cooled, but “ぴえん🥺” is still understood.

Where it gets misread

  • Used to describe a real crisis, it can sound unserious and play down what is happening. Put real trouble into words.
  • To a boss or a client, it can look immature or like pressure. For a polite request, 🙏 is a safer pick.
  • If an adult uses it constantly, it can start to look like whining. Add context so people can tell cute from complaint.
  • Don’t treat it as interchangeable with 🥹: the latter leans toward emotion, the former toward pleading.

Design differences by platform

All four draw big, moist eyes and raised brows, but the size of the eye highlights and the angle of the brows and mouth vary. Apple’s large, bright highlights give the most adorable effect, while Google’s Noto is simpler. Microsoft’s Fluent and Samsung are broadly similar, though the amount of tears in the eyes and the droop of the mouth push the face between “cute plea” and “actual sadness” a little differently on each.
