💘 is a heart with an arrow through it. It comes from Japanese carrier emoji, joined Unicode in 2010, and in English is the “heart with arrow.” The arrow is Cupid’s: in the old story, anyone it strikes falls in love. So the emoji does not mean pain, but being hit by feeling. It is about the moment a crush begins.

How it’s used

  • Love at first sight: “Saw the new manager walk in and… 💘”
  • A new crush: “One text from him and I’m gone 💘”
  • Hitting your taste: “This song hit me from the first line 💘”
  • Confession: “I think I’m falling for you 💘”
  • Valentine’s Day: cards, chocolate packaging and couple posts

❤️ is love that has settled in, and 💘 is the moment it starts. 💓 (beating heart) is a racing pulse, 😍 (heart-eyes) is being smitten by something, and 💔 (broken heart) is its opposite, a breakup.

Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world

In English the emoji is tied to phrases like “struck by Cupid’s arrow,” “smitten” and “crush,” and stands for “love at first sight.” It appears in Valentine’s Day lines, anniversary notes and announcements of a new relationship. Nobody takes the bow and arrow as violent; it reads as a romantic sign.

In Korea it goes with slang like 심쿵 (a heart-thump of excitement) and 뿅 갔다 (“I’m gone”), and appears in talk of a crush as well as in fandom posts about idols and characters. It suits 100-day and other anniversary texts between couples. Among coworkers or friends it often goes out as a joke, but the relationship matters, so choose carefully.

In Japan the name ハートに矢 brings to mind Cupid and 一目惚れ (“love at first sight”) and ときめき (“a flutter of the heart”). It fits Valentine-season ads and love-advice posts, and also works in 推し culture for the feeling of being hooked on an idol or character. It is a light way to say you are in love, so people send it fairly easily.

Where it gets misread

  • Because the arrow goes through the heart, a few people read “hurt.” In nearly every case it means love has begun.
  • It is sometimes confused with 💔 as a breakup. The arrow is the symbol of love, and the cracked line is the symbol of ending it.
  • To a boss, client or someone you have just met, it can read as a sign of interest and feel like pressure.
  • 💝 (heart with ribbon) is a heart you hand over, while 💘 is the moment a heart is hit. For gifts, 💝 fits better.

Design differences by platform

The composition is shared, with an arrow crossing a heart, but the direction of the arrow, the feather shape and how red the heart is differ by platform. Apple’s red heart and arrow are crisp, Google’s Noto is simpler and flatter, and Microsoft’s Fluent has strong depth. Samsung’s arrow looks like it uses a slightly different color mix. Details such as whether the arrow passes in front of the heart or emerges from behind can also vary by device.
