💞 shows two hearts orbiting one another. It was added in Unicode 6.0 in 2010 under the name “revolving hearts,” and that is the idea: love in motion, going back and forth between two people. Where ❤️ is a single declaration, 💞 is a pair, so it suits celebrations of togetherness, mutual crushes and the sweet, slightly gushy end of affection.
How it’s used
- To a partner: “Six months today. Love you so much 💞”
- Wedding wishes: “So happy for you both 💞”
- To a close friend: “So glad we found each other, bestie 💞”
- To family: “Miss you and love you, Mom 💞”
- On a couple photo: “You two are adorable 💞”
💕 (two hearts) looks similar but static, while 💞 has the sense of motion. 💓 (beating heart) is a flutter of nerves and excitement, and 💗 (growing heart) is a feeling that’s swelling. 💞 is the shared version. Unlike 💑 (couple with heart), it contains no people, so it can also be platonic.
Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world
In English-speaking chats 💞 reads as “we’re in love” or “love is in the air.” It is used for relationship milestones, engagement and wedding news, and in sweet, slightly dramatic messages among best friends (“love you forever 💞”). The word “revolving” in the name can throw people off, and some assume it means “refresh” or “rotate,” but the hearts are circling each other, not the arrow icons.
Korean users call it 회전하는 하트 or 빙글빙글 하트 and meet it most often in anniversary messages and comments under couples’ and wedding photos. Messages for Parents’ Day and family occasions also use it. Compared with 💖, it carries more of an “us” feeling, so it sits comfortably in couples’ chats.
In Japan 回転するハート suits the ラブラブ (lovey-dovey) mood: anniversaries, weddings, and a sweet 「大好き💞」 to a close friend. It is a warm, sugary emoji, rarely seen in business messages or anything formal.
Where it gets misread
- Some people mistake it for a refresh or rotate symbol because of the name. It is an affection emoji, not a function.
- Sent to one person, the two-hearts image can suggest “us,” so it may be read as romantic. Be careful with coworkers.
- It’s easy to mix up with 💕, 💗, 💓 and 💖. The thing to remember is that 💞 is love shared between two.
- It doesn’t fit a breakup or a grieving moment, since the image is of love going both directions.
Design differences by platform
Platforms vary in the color pairing of the two hearts, their sizes, and how the circling motion is shown with curves or lines. In general it is two pink-toned hearts overlapping and swirling. Apple’s hearts are soft and plump with gradients, Google’s Noto is flat and simple, Microsoft’s Fluent has the most depth, and Samsung’s outlines are crisp and cute. Some designs give the hearts different colors so they are easy to tell apart, while others use near-identical shades, but the meaning stays the same.
