⚡ is a zigzag yellow lightning bolt. Its official Unicode name is “high voltage sign,” a nod to the warning symbols on electrical equipment, and it has been around since the early days of emoji, including Japanese phone sets. Today it covers far more than danger: electricity, energy, quickness, power and the thrill of something sudden. It is the go-to icon for “this is fast and lively.”

How it’s used

  • Speed: “Same-day delivery ⚡”
  • Energy: “Two coffees in and fully charged ⚡”
  • Flash sales and limited offers: “Today only, 24-hour sale ⚡”
  • Electricity and charging: “Fast-charging my phone ⚡”
  • Breaking news: “Just in: the announcement is live ⚡”

Related emojis are 🔋 (battery level), 🔌 (plug and connection) and 🌩️ (thundercloud weather). ⚡ is the closest to the instant a current flows, or a burst of speed. It is distinct from ✨ (sparkles) and 🔥 (fire) too.

Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world

In English the bolt is a symbol of energy and speed, called a “lightning bolt” or simply “bolt.” It turns up in sports team names and logos, energy-drink branding and “breaking” alerts. Superhero fans may think of the Flash, and in software it is common to prefix a commit message with ⚡ to mark a performance improvement.

In Korean it often signals quick, spontaneous things, as in 번개 배송 (“lightning delivery”), 번개장터 (“Lightning Market” resale app) and 번개 모임 (“a last-minute get-together”). That is why shopping sites and event posts use it constantly.

In Japan the name is 高電圧, and in everyday talk it goes with 雷, 電撃 and ビリビリ (“tingly buzz”). Many people think of electric-type characters in games and anime, Pokémon in particular, and it suits abrupt announcements such as 速報 or 電撃発表.

Where it gets misread

  • It isn’t a true electrical safety sign. For proper hazard notices, ⚠️ (warning) is more accurate, and a bare ⚡ can read as playful.
  • Don’t confuse it with 🌩️ (cloud with lightning). 🌩️ is weather, while ⚡ stands for energy and speed.
  • It is not 🔥 (fire). 🔥 means popular or hot, while ⚡ means fast and thrilling.
  • Keep it out of conversations about accidents, especially electrocution or lightning strikes, where it would seem flippant.

Design differences by platform

All four major platforms show a yellow bolt, with differences in shape and shading. Some use an orange gradient for a three-dimensional look, others a flat, simple yellow, and the angle of the zigzag varies too. The impressions differ a little, but the meaning of electricity and speed reads the same everywhere.
