😐 is a face with two dot eyes and a straight, level mouth, showing about as little feeling as an emoji can. It arrived with Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and goes by “meh face” or “deadpan face” in everyday talk. Its job is to say “I feel nothing in particular,” and the blankness is the entire message: too flat to be happy, too calm to be upset.
How it’s used
- Flat disinterest: “Mandatory team-building day on Saturday 😐”
- Awkward moments: “Accidentally liked my ex’s photo from 2019 😐”
- Deadpan sarcasm: “Cool. Love that for me. 😐”
- Withholding a reaction: “So the two-hour meeting could have been an email 😐”
- Neutral status report: “Monday. Again. 😐”
Next to it, 😑 has its eyes shut as lines and leans toward exasperation, 😶 has no mouth at all and suggests unspoken words, and 🙄 adds an eye roll. 😐 sits closest to a true shrug.
Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world
In English, 😐 is the standard face for “meh,” awkwardness and dry sarcasm, and it carries a passive-aggressive edge. “Sure, whatever you want. 😐” rarely means sure. It also turns up in memes where someone pretends to stay perfectly calm in the middle of chaos, usually under a caption that starts with “me:”.
Korean texters tend to reach for 😑 or the text face ㅡㅡ when they are annoyed, and keep 😐 for “no particular feeling.” If a Korean friend answers your dinner suggestion with only 😐, they are probably lukewarm rather than angry, but they are not saying yes either.
In Japan the official name is ポーカーフェイス (poker face), and it fits the same slot as 真顔 (a straight face) or a lone “…”. On LINE it often shows up when someone doesn’t know how to reply and wants to fill the gap with something.
Where it gets misread
- Answering a question or invitation with 😐 alone usually reads as disinterest or quiet displeasure. Add a 🙂 if you actually mean it kindly.
- Sending it to a boss or client in response to praise or thanks looks rude.
- Pretending to be unbothered as a joke works only with people who share the joke. Older relatives may read it as a real non-reaction.
- It is easy to mix up with 😑 and 😶: use 😑 for irritation, 😶 for silence and 😐 for neutral.
Design differences by platform
Apple, Google’s Noto, Microsoft’s Fluent and Samsung all keep the same basic recipe of dot eyes and a straight mouth, so the meaning rarely changes. What varies is eye size, mouth length, the yellow tone and how much shading is applied. The more three-dimensional versions look a little more tired, while the flatter ones come across as drier and more playful.
