😑 has horizontal slits for eyes and a flat line for a mouth, a face with all feeling switched off. It came in with Unicode 6.0 in 2010 under the official name “expressionless face.” People also call it the “blank face,” “deadpan face” or “-_- face.” If 😐 says “I feel nothing in particular,” 😑 says “I am too stunned, tired or fed up to react.”

How it’s used

  • Disbelief: “He said he’s ‘on his way’ half an hour after the meeting started 😑”
  • Exasperation: “They made the exact same mistake again 😑”
  • Boredom: “Hour three of this meeting 😑”
  • Speechless: “…😑”
  • A failed joke: “Was that supposed to be funny? 😑”

😐 has open dot eyes and sits at neutral, while 😶 has no mouth and suggests unspoken words. 🙄 rolls its eyes upward to show exasperation, and 😒 gives a sideways glare of disapproval. 😑 is the most thoroughly shut-down of them all.

Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world

In English, 😑 is the emoji twin of the text face -_-, and it conveys “I’m not amused,” “no words” and “unimpressed.” A single “Wow. 😑” is a classic way to answer a weak joke or a flimsy excuse. It often travels with slang such as “bruh,” and in a short message it can read as colder than 😒 because it shows no feeling at all.

In Korea, it is closest to ㅡㅡ and -_-, and it is a staple for exasperation and irritation. Among friends it is used with a laugh, as in “ㅋㅋ 어이없네 😑,” but sent to a boss or an elder it comes across as rude. Pairing it with an ellipsis makes the “I have nothing to say” feel stronger.

In Japan it is 無表情 (“expressionless”), close to 真顔, 呆れた and “no comment.” Because the closed eyes can look sleepy, some people use it for 「眠い」 or 「だるい」 moods too, and it links to text faces such as (-_-).

Where it gets misread

  • It can be mistaken for sleepiness, like 😪 or 😴, because the eyes look shut. Some people will read it as “I’m tired.”
  • It is hard to separate from 😐. Remember: dot eyes mean 😐 (no particular feeling) and line eyes mean 😑 (exasperation).
  • It can be read as anger, though it is the cold kind rather than shouting, and that can be more intimidating.
  • It is a poor reply to praise or thanks.

Design differences by platform

On Apple, Google’s Noto, Microsoft’s Fluent and Samsung, the base design of line eyes and a flat mouth is shared, and the differences are not big enough to change the meaning. What varies is the length and thickness of the eye lines, the yellow tone and how three-dimensional the face looks. Shaded versions look slightly more tired and sleepy, while flat versions feel drier and more icy.
