😆 has an open mouth and eyes scrunched shut into > <. Unicode added it in 2010, and it goes by  as a shortcode and, to a generation of early internet users, as XD. That old text emoticon puts an X for the squeezed-shut eyes and a D for the open grin; this emoji is the same picture in color. It’s the face of being caught off guard by something funny or just plain delighted, with energy to spare and no tears yet.
How it’s used
- Cracking up: “Okay that was actually hilarious 😆”
- Excited anticipation: “Field trip tomorrow 😆”
- Playful ribbing: “Got you, didn’t I? 😆”
- Teasing a friend: “Did you get lost again? 😆”
- Cheering: “We won in overtime 😆😆”
On the scale of laughing faces: 😊 is a smile, 😁 is a grin, 😆 is a full laugh, 😂 adds tears, and 🤣 has you rolling on the floor. 😄 is a happy, open-mouthed face where the eyes aren’t shut so tightly, so it feels calmer. The main difference from 😂 is that 😆 has no tears and more bounce.
Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world
In English, 😆 grew out of the XD era and is now seen by many as the slightly innocent, enthusiastic laugh, while 😂 and 💀 take on the heavier lifting. It sits comfortably in “lol 😆” and “that was awesome 😆,” and is rarely read as sarcastic. Some younger users think of it as a throwback.
In Korea it works like a picture of ㅋㅋㅋㅋ, a light laugh sent to a friend after a joke, with the clenched eyes suggesting “so funny I can’t keep them open.” Because it is milder than 😂 it is used less often, but it is easy to understand.
In Japan the name is きゃー, which tells you the range: not only laughter but delighted squeals, excitement and the burst of joy you’d write as わーい or やったー. It lines up with kaomoji like (≧▽≦), and works even when nothing is strictly funny.
Where it gets misread
- The scrunched eyes can make it look like someone grimacing in pain or shouting, especially on a small screen. If the context is unclear, add words.
- Following a teasing remark, it won’t make the jab disappear. “I heard you bombed the test 😆” still reads as mockery.
- After sad news, an accident or illness, never use it. Laughing emoji are among the most context-sensitive.
- Don’t treat it as identical to 😂: without tears, the laugh is a step lower.
Design differences by platform
All four show tightly shut ><-style eyes and a wide-open mouth. How the teeth and tongue are drawn, and how sharply the eyes are angled, vary. Apple’s shows teeth and tongue clearly and feels like a real roar of laughter; Google’s Noto is a simpler, calmer drawing. Microsoft’s Fluent is dimensional, and Samsung is broadly similar. Depending on the mouth size, the same emoji can look more like hysterical laughter or more like a cheer.
