Rolling on the floor laughing emoji

The louder sibling of 😂, tilted over and crying from laughter. Because the exaggeration is built in, using it on something mildly funny can read as forced or even sarcastic. Read the guide

Meaning and usage

🤣 is a face laughing so hard it has tipped over. It was added in 2016 to cover “funnier than 😂,” and it is a direct picture of the old chat acronym ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing), which is why many people just call it the ROFL emoji. The face is tilted about 45 degrees with tears flying off both sides, and that tilt is what makes it feel like a whole-body laugh rather than a chuckle.

How it’s used

  • A genuine howl: “no way that actually happened 🤣🤣🤣”
  • Stepping up from 😂 when it isn’t enough: “😂 → 🤣”
  • Receiving a brutal joke: “ok that was too far 🤣”
  • Laughing in disbelief: “that took you three hours?? 🤣”
  • As the whole reply to a meme or clip: just “🤣”

If 😂 is “I burst out laughing,” 🤣 is “I fell over.” Both have tears, so people who don’t look closely can’t tell them apart, and in practice most users settle on one of the two and stick with it.

Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world

In English it rides alongside “ROFL,” “dying” and “I can’t breathe.” But once 😂 got branded as the millennial laugh, 🤣 was lumped into the same bin, and Gen Z reaches for 💀 or 😭 instead. To younger English speakers it now has a whiff of “the emoji my parents use on Facebook,” and Facebook comment sections are indeed where it thrives.

In Korea the default laugh is typed out as ㅋㅋㅋㅋ, so emoji are a supplement; 🤣 is the one chosen when someone wants to make clear they really laughed. On KakaoTalk the platform’s own sticker sets handle big laughs, so the Unicode 🤣 shows up more in Instagram and YouTube comments. Koreans in their forties and fifties often string several together in place of ㅎㅎ, which gives it a slightly “grown-up laugh” feel to younger users.

In Japan the name is 笑い転げる (rolling over laughing) and it maps onto 爆笑 (uproarious laughter). Written laughter there is carried by www or 草 (“grass”), so 🤣 is decoration on top of that, and it spread a bit later than 😂. LINE stickers do much of the heavy lifting for big laughs, so a heavy 🤣 user comes across as someone with big, visible emotions.

Where it gets misread

  • Attached to something only mildly funny, 🤣 can look sarcastic. The exaggeration is larger than 😂’s, so for a polite courtesy laugh use 😊 or a simple “haha.”
  • When someone is describing their own mistake or embarrassment, reacting with 🤣 can feel like mockery. 😅 or 😭 is safer.
  • 😂 and 🤣 differ only in intensity, not meaning. Mixing both in one message doesn’t make it funnier.
  • 😹 (cat with tears of joy) is the same laugh on a cat face; it reads as playful rather than as a full-blown fit.

Design differences by platform

Apple’s face is clearly tilted with long tears flying off, the most dynamic version. Google’s Noto has a big round mouth that reads as cheerful, while Microsoft’s Fluent face is three-dimensional and lies almost sideways, which makes the “rolling” strongest. Samsung’s eyes are squeezed into something closer to a “>” shape and the tears are small, so it looks tamer than the others. Because of the tilt differences, a 🤣 sent from a Samsung phone can look more exaggerated when it arrives on an iPhone.
