😭 is a face with twin streams of tears running from both eyes and a wide-open mouth. The official name is “loudly crying face,” but its real range is much wider than the name. It carries sadness, being touched, indignation and theatrical whining, and since around 2020 younger English speakers have used it in place of 😂 to mean “laughing until I cry,” which pushed it to the top of X’s most-used emoji list for several years running. It is one of the rare emoji that handles both sorrow and laughter at once.

How it’s used

  • Sadness or disappointment: “couldn’t get concert tickets 😭”
  • Being moved: “I read your letter and cried 😭 thank you”
  • Frustration or whining: “you all went without me?? 😭”
  • Overwhelmed by cuteness: “look at the puppy’s paws 😭😭”
  • Laughter (younger users): “why is he like this 😭😭😭” (instead of 😂)

😢 (crying face) is a single quiet tear; 😭 is sobbing out loud. Because it is so exaggerated it works well for light moments, while genuine deep grief usually calls for 😢 or actual words.

Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world

In English the laughing use is now the most visible. Phrases like “I’m crying,” “sobbing” and “not me laughing at this 😭” literally say “crying” while meaning “this is hilarious.” Together with 💀 it forms the generation’s replacement for 😂, which is joked about as giving away your age. At the same time the original meanings of sadness and being moved are fully alive, so the surrounding text decides.

In Korea the typed faces ㅠㅠ and ㅜㅜ already cover crying, so 😭 is reserved for one notch stronger. A large share of its use is positive overflow, as in “too cute 😭” or “so moved 😭,” and in idol fandoms flooding a performance clip with 😭 is a form of praise. The laughing use is growing among people under 25 but hasn’t displaced ㅋㅋㅋ.

In Japan the name is 大泣き (bawling), and it is tightly linked to fan vocabulary like 尊い (“so precious it hurts”). Reacting to news about a favorite character or idol with 😭😭😭 signals rapture, not sadness, and it often accompanies the one-word review 泣いた (“I cried”). It also softens small apologies and requests, as in ごめん😭.

Where it gets misread

  • In a condolence message or any serious comfort, 😭 can look theatrical. Use 😢, 🙏 or plain words instead.
  • If a younger friend reacts to your joke with 😭, it almost certainly means it was funny. No need to worry you upset them.
  • The opposite mistake also happens: brushing off a genuinely upset 😭 as “probably laughing.” If there is no text around it, ask.
  • It differs from 🥹 (face holding back tears), which is emotion welling up before it spills; 😭 is after it spills. 😿 (crying cat) is the same idea played for laughs.

Design differences by platform

Apple’s tears fall in two thick streams to the chin and the mouth is wide, the closest to real wailing. Google’s Noto has tears fanning outward like a waterfall with the eyes squeezed shut, which reads as cartoonish; Microsoft’s Fluent face is three-dimensional with semi-transparent tears. Samsung’s mouth is smaller and the brows droop, so it looks more pitiful than the others. The upshot is that the same 😭 tilts toward “heartbroken” on a Samsung screen and toward “howling with laughter” on Google’s.
