Downcast face with sweat emoji

A drooping face with a bead of sweat, for cold sweat, awkwardness, exhaustion or an “oops.” Unlike the grinning face with sweat, there is no laughter. Read the guide

Meaning and usage

😓 is a face with sagging brows and a blue sweat drop on its forehead. It comes from Japanese carrier emoji, entered Unicode in 2010, and in Japanese is named 冷や汗, “cold sweat.” The English name, “downcast face with sweat,” points to a different feeling: someone dejected and working hard. One face thus mixes the sweat of a tight spot with the weariness after a long day.

How it’s used

  • Oops moment: “Sent that to the wrong person… 😓”
  • Awkward spot: “They just asked me to present in five minutes 😓”
  • Exhaustion: “All-day meetings, I made it somehow 😓”
  • Humble apology: “Sorry for the late reply 😓”
  • Worry: “Exam results come out today, I’m nervous 😓”

😅 (grinning face with sweat) laughs off the awkwardness, while 😓 shows the strain without a smile. 😰 (anxious face with sweat) is more frightened, and 😥 (sad but relieved face) leans toward sorrow. 😓 sits in the middle: stuck and tired, but getting on with it.

Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world

In English, the name sends most readers toward sadness, disappointment and hard effort. People use it for grinding at the gym or studying for an exam, or as a short “ugh, that’s rough” reaction. It does not carry the sense of polite apology that it has in Japan, at least not as clearly.

In Korea the emoji ties in with 식은땀 (“cold sweat”) and 진땀 (“a nervous sweat”) and is used in awkward or alarming moments. Added to an apology to a boss or a hard request, it deepens the sense of being sorry and is generally safe. It is also a light way to say you are worn out from overtime or exams.

In Japan the name 冷や汗 describes it best: the flustered, embarrassed feeling right after a mistake, softened. People add it at the end of lines like “ちょっと失敗しちゃいました😓” (“I slipped up a little”), much as they would add “(汗)” or “(苦笑)”. It suits the tiredness of “お疲れさま” after work, too, and signals a modest attitude.

Where it gets misread

  • Sent to an English speaker as a Japanese-style apology, it can be read as “I’m sad” or “I’m down.”
  • It is easy to mix up with 😅, but 😅 is a sheepish smile and 😓 is trouble without a smile. To laugh something off, 😅 is correct.
  • Replying 😓 to someone describing a truly hard time or a health problem can look careless.
  • Unlike 😢 or 😭, the drop is sweat, not a tear, so sadness is not the main emotion.

Design differences by platform

Every platform shows a yellow face with drooping brows and mouth and a blue sweat drop on one side of the forehead. Whether the eyes are shut or half-open, how far the mouth turns down and the size of the drop vary slightly. Apple’s brows are clearly drooping, Google’s Noto is simpler and rounder, Microsoft’s Fluent adds depth, and Samsung’s expression lines look a little different. The same emoji can look sadder or more worn out depending on the device.
