😱 is the scream: a bluish face, both hands pressed to the cheeks, mouth stretched wide. It comes from the Japanese phone emoji set and was added in Unicode 6.0 in 2010. People often compare it with Edvard Munch’s painting The Scream, and in English many also think of the Home Alone poster pose. Its official name is long, so people call it the screaming face, or just “the scream emoji.”
How it’s used
- Horror films: “That jump scare made me yell 😱”
- Plot twists: “That ending?? 😱”
- Sticker shock: “This bag costs $3,000? 😱”
- Close calls: “Booked the wrong date 😱”
- Headlines and hype: “Shocking twist inside 😱”
😨 (fearful face) is silent, frozen dread, and 😱 is the version with the volume turned up. 😲 (astonished face) is wide-eyed surprise, 🤯 (exploding head) is mind-blown, and 😰 (anxious face with sweat) is worry.
Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world
In English, 😱 is the go-to for “OMG.” It turns up on horror trailers, around Halloween, in spoiler reactions and in breaking-news promos. Most uses are theatrical rather than frightened, so “Wait, we’re out of coffee 😱” is a perfectly normal sentence. The same melodrama has made it a standard of clickbait titles.
Korean readers match it with 헉 (a gasp), 대박 and 멘붕 (“mental breakdown”). Beyond horror movies it covers card bills, exam grades and the number on the bathroom scale, in an exaggerated tone. Used with the word “충격” (shock) in video titles and blog ads, it also carries a bait-like image.
In Japanese the compact name is 恐怖 (“fear”), and the face is widely nicknamed 「ムンクの叫び」, after Munch’s painting. It goes with 「ギャー」, 「ひぃぃ」, 「うそでしょ!?」 and 「ガーン」. Besides horror content it is used in everyday little disasters, like a snack that wrecks a diet.
Where it gets misread
- Placed under real news about an accident or disaster, it can read as sensational or mocking. Show concern another way.
- It’s easy to confuse with 😨, 😰 and 😧, but only 😱 is the screaming, top-volume tier.
- Overused in titles and ads, it undermines trust, because readers sense the click-chasing.
- Children or people sensitive to horror may find it unsettling.
Design differences by platform
Apple, Google (Noto), Microsoft Fluent and Samsung mostly share the layout: hands on the cheeks, mouth wide open, face tinted bluish. How strong the blue is, how the eyes are drawn and what is shown inside the mouth varies. Wide-open eyes make it a horror-movie scream, and squeezed-shut eyes make it look comic. In all of them, the hands on the face are the telling feature.
