😖 is a face with its eyes squeezed shut and a wavy, twisted mouth. It has been in Unicode since version 6.0 in 2010 and came over from Japanese phone emoji sets. The official name, “confounded face,” sounds like bewilderment, but in practice people use it for an “ugh!” feeling: frustration, a wince, or something sour or sore.
How it’s used
- Irritation: “The wifi dropped again right before the call 😖”
- Cringing at your past self: “Just re-read the text I sent last night 😖”
- Sour taste: “Bit into a lemon thinking it was an orange 😖”
- Physical discomfort: “Back from the dentist, jaw still throbbing 😖”
- Pleading: “Please let me pass this time 😖”
The common thread is gritting through something. It isn’t crying like 😭 (loudly crying face), so it suits a complaint where you’re still holding it together.
Korea, Japan and the English-speaking world
In English, 😖 sits in the cluster of strained faces with 😣 (persevering face) and 😫 (tired face). It goes with “ugh” and “I can’t,” and is used for cringe, sour food or an aching tooth. Occasionally, in flirtier chat, it is used to mean “I can’t resist,” so the spread of uses is wider than the name suggests.
In Korea, it leans toward 아 진짜! and 으아, a mix of annoyance and helpless sympathy for yourself. It pairs well with 이불킥 (kicking the blanket in shame at a memory) and with everyday gripes such as exam results or a late night at work. People generally understand it as “irritation,” not “confusion.”
In Japan the name is 困惑した顔, but the real-world sense is closer to ぐぬぬ (frustrated but at a loss for words) or うぅ…. Since it started on Japanese phones, the comic-style expression feels familiar, and it is a cute way to show embarrassment, regret or a sigh of disappointment.
Where it gets misread
- Taking the name literally and using it for confusion will sound off. 😰 or 😓 work better for being in a bind.
- It looks like 😣, 😫 and 😩. 😖 stands out for the tightly shut eyes and the twisted mouth, a feeling that’s about to burst.
- Sending it to someone who got truly bad news can come across as flippant.
- It does not mean you’re angry at the person. 😠 (angry face) points at someone, while 😖 is a grumble about the situation.
Design differences by platform
The squeezed-shut eyes and wavy mouth are consistent across platforms. Apple’s version leans toward a “> <” eye shape and a serious tone. Google’s Noto is rounder and lighter, so it reads as a pout, Microsoft’s Fluent shows wrinkles through its shading, and Samsung draws the mouth fairly large and curly. Depending on the platform, the same 😖 can look like real pain or a cute grumble.
